The Danchi at Twilight

The word the locals use is danchi. English-language housing projects do not carry quite the right weight. Teababa carries less, and that is why it works: a nursery-rhyme name for something that should not be spoken outside after dusk.

The oldest surviving report from within the system comes from a woman named Saito Keiko, who moved into the third-floor apartment of the Shinkawa East Estate in Fukuoka in 1987. She was thirty-four at the time — young enough to notice every sound that should not exist between neighboring units. What she noted first was not a voice but an odor: a thick floral chemical smell, like the air after a car explosion layered over something organic and slightly sweet, as though someone were burning sugar on skin.

She attributed it to the third-floor occupant, unit 304 — a man named Nishihara Kousuke, age seventy-one according to his intercom directory. She would later describe how that chemical bouquet intensified each time Nishihara moved from one side of his apartment to another. The odor was not ambient. It followed him, and when it crossed the thin partition into her unit, Keiko would press her mouth against a kitchen towel soaked in vinegar until her eyes watered.

This is consistent with what forensic nurses at Fukuoka City Hospital recorded between 2008 and 2015: patients presenting with unexplained peeling of epidermal tissue along the forearms and hands, no history of dermatological disease, no occupational exposure to known irritants — only one shared symptom: a smell they described as “floral but wrong,” sometimes accompanied by faint traces of a substance that chromatography could never fully classify. The official diagnosis was contact dermatitis. Saito Keiko would later testify that this was the lie they chose for her neighbors’ sake.

What the old women knew before the reports existed

There is a category of tale in Japanese urban folklore that predates the word teababa by centuries. Its original form appeared in an Edo-period manuscript attributed to a minor court physician named Kato, who collected it from patients in a rural district outside Okayama on grounds he never fully explained. The text describes a woman — unnamed, age indeterminate — who is observed each evening taking off her skin as one might remove a kimono before bathwater: methodically, with deliberate slowness, peeling from the wrist upward until something beneath it begins to move on its own.

Kato’s commentary calls this “a natural defense mechanism that has become misrouted,” which is not a phrase you expect to find in an eighteenth-century medical treatise. His successor, in 1842, simply records: “She washes the inside where no light ever reaches.”

The translation from teababa into English settles somewhere between hand-cream witch and skin-peeling hag, neither of which captures the precise cultural weight of the suffix -baba. In Japanese, baba is both a term for grandmother and an epithet for something that should not have been addressed that way. The horror lies in whichever translation you choose: either the woman becomes too old to be human, or she tries so hard never to become old that she has erased whatever line separates the two.

What happened at Shinkawa East Estate

In May 1988, a year after Saito Keiko moved in, a nurse at Fukuoka City Hospital submitted an unusual report: a man between sixty and seventy years of age arrived via ambulance with full-thickness epidermal loss along both forearms. The pattern was not random — it followed the motion lines of someone peeling from wrist upward. Laboratory analysis found traces of a substance on his skin that matched a pharmaceutical-grade hand cream formulation currently unavailable in Japanese markets, originating either from an Eastern European manufacturer or a facility operating outside any regulatory jurisdiction we have been able to identify.

He could not explain how he acquired it. He did not know the name of the building across which this scent always traveled. His name was Nishihara Kousuke. In his own words: “From 304, I do not hear her voice. But once a month, on nights when the moon is too bright and there is no wind, she walks past my window.”

The nurse who transcribed the statement — one Tanaka Yuike — wrote in her notes: He said ‘she,’ but his eyes did not move toward 304.

How it works

There are two forms of teababa. The first is what medical literature describes only indirectly as “age-regressive epidermal shedding.” It is what the Fukuoka reports document. An older person comes to possess a substance — the exact chemical composition remains classified under Japanese pharmaceutical privacy law, and several laboratories have declined to publish their findings on grounds that they cannot account for one of its components — which allows them to shed not only dead skin but all of it: every layer, each morning in succession, leaving beneath something younger still.

For how long this works is never clear from the data. The longest documented period — three years and four months at Shinkawa East Estate before Unit 304’s final reported incident — is unusually short even by these counts. What happens after that cycle ends remains the category of inquiry where doctors stop taking notes and begin writing letters home, just as Dr. Yilmaz Korkmaz would in the Cappadocia case we have already covered.

The second form has never appeared in a clinical setting. It exists only in testimony: people who did not peel — who had no access to that substance — instead found they were able to observe what their elders did when alone. From outside, peeling looks like nothing at all: the room becomes empty. What it is from inside has been described by Saito Keiko as “the smell before the skin remembers that it should not be you anymore.”

The last incident at Shinkawa East Estate

On November 14 of an unspecified year — Keiko’s notes are inconsistent on this point, suggesting she wrote them in fragments over a long period of time during which something about the calendar itself seemed unreliable — Nishihara Kousuke was found by hospital staff lying in the danchi courtyard between Unit 304 and the communal trash area. He could not speak. His forearms were smooth to the touch for the first time since his arrival in that estate: he had shed everything again.

What the nurses noted — what they recorded under unverified environmental observation before redacting the section from their official case notes — was the presence of an object on his chest that could not have been there a moment earlier according to any mechanism involving the elevators or stairwells, because both had been empty all night and there were no witnesses, which is itself notable in a residential area where every door has a peephole.

The object was approximately eight centimeters by four. It had the texture of polished porcelain. On its surface, printed in what appeared to be Japanese but which none of the hospital’s forensic linguists could authenticate:

Do not wash this off.
You will forget who used it last time you needed me.

He never returned to Shinkawa East Estate after that day. According to Fukuoka registry records, Unit 304 was vacated six weeks later and the unit has been marked for demolition ever since — an unusual timeline for a building otherwise still in active use throughout its surrounding block.

The nurse Tanaka submitted one final report before she retired early that October: I think it is possible that Nishihara Kousuke did not become younger, I think it is just possible he became someone else’s old man. She has never commented on this statement outside her professional file.

Grachtengeest —
